  • Peg Traband is featured for winning this year’s Jimmy A. Young Medal, which she’ll receive at the upcoming AARC Congress in Las Vegas, in this article in the UT News published by the University of Toledo. (You can read more about Peg and her accomplishments in your October issue of AARC Times.)
  • Dr. Fred Helmholz is profiled in this article in the August issue of Generations of Today. The physician, who will turn 100 next year, is credited with helping to establish the educational foundations of respiratory care back in the 1950s and ’60s.

  • Curtis Varner comments on heart disease in this article on the WCTV website about a recent chili cook-off held at his hospital to raise funds for the condition. 
  • Mark Seager is noted for working with the American Sleep Apnea Association on a program that accepts donations of used CPAP equipment to give to people who can’t afford the devices in this article in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN, Star Tribune.
  • Janie Castro Rios and her students receive kudos for winning first and second place honors in their state society Sputum Bowl competition in this article in the Mountain Home, AR, Baxter Bulletin.
  • Shawna Strickland talks about COPD screening via the Drive4COPD campaign in this article in the Columbia, MO, Daily Tribune, noting RTs in her community are hosting several events to get the word out, including a screening at a local festival dubbed “Roots ’N Blues ’N BBQ.”

That’s just the nature of the beast of being back in school,” he was quoted as saying.
  • Gloria Morris is noted for completing the Healthcare Emergency Management course offered by the Center for Domestic Preparedness in this article in the Lewiston, ME, Sun-Journal. The center is operated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
  • Walt Wilson reports great results for a local cystic fibrosis walk he organized at his college in this article in the Natchez, MS, Democrat. The walk raised nearly $2,150 for the CF Foundation.
