AARC Convention on
Quality and Safety in Healthcare
Attendees at the American Association
for Respiratory Care's International Respiratory Congress in Las Vegas
will hear from a leader in the research community, as Carolyn M. Clancy,
MD, director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
at the Department of Health and Human Services, takes the podium for
the keynote address.
A
general internist and health services researcher, Dr. Clancy's major
research interests include improving health care quality and patient
safety and reducing disparities in care associated with a patient's
race, ethnicity, gender, income, and education. As director of the AHRQ,
she launched the first annual reports to Congress on health care disparities
and health care quality.
“With
all of the current activity aimed at health system transformation, there
are many opportunities for respiratory therapists to enhance their value
to patients and to help make the system better,” Dr. Clancy said. “I
am honored to have been chosen as the keynote speaker for the Association's
56th International Respiratory Congress.”
Dr. Clancy is a graduate of Boston
College and the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Following
clinical training in internal medicine, she was a Henry J. Kaiser Family
Foundation Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining
the AHRQ in 1990, she was also an assistant professor in the department
of internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia.
Dr. Clancy served as the director
of the AHRQ's Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research before
being appointed director in 2003. She was reappointed to the director's
position in 2009, and she also serves as a clinical associate professor
in the department of medicine at the George Washington University School
of Medicine. She is a senior associate editor of Health Services
Research and sits on multiple editorial boards, including those
for the Annals of Internal Medicine , Annals of Family
Medicine , American Journal of Medical Quality , and Medical
Care Research and Review .
A member of the Institute of
Medicine, Dr. Clancy was elected a Master of the American College of
Physicians in 2004, and in 2009 she received the William B. Graham Prize
