Joan A. Kohorst Wins Chair-Elect Position

The Home Care Section elected long-time AARC member Joan A. Kohorst, MA, RRT-NPS, clinical manager at Apria Healthcare in St. Louis, MO, chair-elect during the AARC elections last fall.

Joan has served the Association in numerous capacities over the years, including as president of the Missouri Society for Respiratory Care from 2000 to 2002. She is also a member of the American Lung Association Pulmonary Society, Missouri Thoracic Society, and American Association of Home Care, and has contributed to publications ranging from “Egan’s Fundamentals of Respiratory Care Workbook” to the “Pediatric Home Care Procedure Manual” and “Manual of Home Health Nursing Procedures.”

Joan believes the biggest challenge facing the respiratory care profession today is “the declining pool of available therapists to care for an increasing number of patients with chronic lung disorders.” Read more about her thoughts on resolving this and other issues.

Invacare Award for Excellence in Home Respiratory Care: Gene Andrews, RRT

Gene Andrews, RRT, vice president of clinical services and operations at Hytech Homecare in Mentor, OH, has received the 2003 Invacare Award for Excellence in Home Respiratory Care.

The award, which was established in 1992 by Invacare to honor remarkable individual achievement in home respiratory care, is presented annually by the American Respiratory Care Foundation at the AARC International Respiratory Congress.

Gene, who received the award at the 2003 AARC Congress in Las Vegas, NV, was honored for his dedication to bringing high quality home respiratory services to patients throughout northeast Ohio.
“ Gene is one of the most well-liked and well-respected respiratory therapists practicing today,” says Joseph Lewarski, RRT, president of Hytech Homecare/Hytech Medical Supply and Home Care Section chair. “His years of tireless dedication to the profession, and most recently to home care, prove him worthy of this prestigious award.”

News from the National Lung Health
Education Program

by Gretchen Lawrence, RRT, NLHEP liaison to the AARC

If you read your October issue of AARC Times (or attended the AARC International Respiratory Congress in December), you know that Dr. Tom Petty, co-chair of the National Lung Health Education Program (NLHEP), received the 2003 Jimmy A. Young Medal - the highest honor in our profession! That's the good news. The bad news is that Dr. Petty is stepping down from his role at NLHEP. However, the organization will continue to grow under the able leadership of Dr. Dennis Doherty, who has co-chaired NLHEP with Dr. Petty for the past three years. Dr. Petty will also remain in the picture as chair emeritus.

The NLHEP also continues to provide excellent resources for RTs. Many are available only by download from the web site. But there are four booklets in print — and AARC members can order up to 200 of any or all of these at no cost from the NLHEP. Go to the web site for more information on how to order. Here are the titles, with the latest booklet listed first:

  • “Simple Office Spirometry for the Primary Care Physician,” by Dr. Tom Petty and Dr. Paul Enright. This booklet is designed for you to share with PCPs who are interestrd in providing simple spirometry in their offices.
  • “Save Your Breath America,” by Drs. Petty and Doherty. This booklet is for patients, so share it with COPD patients in the hospital, pulmonary rehab, and patient support groups.
  • “Prevent Emphysema Now,” by Drs. Petty and Doherty. This booklet is for professionals, so share it with your fellow RTs, physicians, and others on your interdisciplinary team, like PT, OT, and social work.
  • “Early Recognition and Management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease,” by Drs. Doherty and Petty, and Dr. Jim Seabass. This is another booklet for professionals that expands on information provided in “Prevent Emphysema Now.”

Be sure to check the NLHEP web site for a complete listing of all educational materials, including those available from other sources.
