RC Solutions Showcase

New in 2009! The AARC Program Committee is happy to announce a new special session inside the Exhibit Hall at the AARC Congress: The RC Solutions Showcase. The Showcase is a great opportunity for attendees to hear exhibitors give formal, scheduled presentations on their new and innovative products and developments; that is, information on products, services, care coordination/delivery models, and/or data with relevant scientific implications. The 30-minute presentations will be presented in the RC Solutions Showcase inside the Exhibit Hall on Saturday–Tuesday, Dec 5–7. The schedule below shows companies doing presentations, as of today. Please note that the companies involved provided all topics, speakers, and descriptions. The AARC has not approved, nor is responsible for information presented at these presentations. Remember to come back to this page for additional presentations as exhibitors sign up to participate in the RC Solutions Showcase.

The Science of Electrical Impedance Tomography

Michael Ogilvie RN, Best, Netherlands

Assessment of the lung has traditionally been accomplished through radiographic means such as chest x-rays, CT scans, and other diagnostic areas which necessitate the patient be transported away from the ICU and exposure to radiation. Transporting patients in and out of the ICU has inherent risks requiring properly trained staff, and only provides a static image at the time of testing. The science of measuring electrical impedance will be introduced to attendees including the principle of operation, application in the ICU, and potential benefits that this technology may bring to the bedside in the future.

The Life Pulse HFV: How It Works and Why It’s Effective

Evan Richards RRT, Salt Lake City UT

The Life Pulse is important for numerous reasons: It is the only high-frequency for infants that uses a jet-nozzle delivery system, allows passive exhalation, and provides I:E ratios greater than 1:2. The resulting jet pulses deliver breaths to the airway with enough velocity to push the small tidal volumes deep into the lungs. Studies have demonstrated that HFJV is a more efficient means of ventilating and oxygenation compared to CV or HFOV. You can achieve the same blood gases using lower PIP and MAP. The combination of passive exhalation and control of I:E ratio produce a more effective exhalation phase for patients that long expiratory time constants, pneumonia, excessive secretions, or hyperinflation. This combination also prompts airways clearance.

Integrated Pulmonary Index: How It Works and Benefits to Clinicians

David Lain PhD JD FCCP RRT, Easton, MD

Early recognition of a patient’s changing ventilatory status is essential for recognizing respiratory failure before it happens. By using the Integrated Pulmonary Index (IPI), clinicians can quickly and easily assess a patient’s ventilatory status and monitor a patient’s changing condition, thus facilitating more timely interventions to improve patient outcomes. The IPI algorithm utilizes the real time measures and interactions of four parameters—end tidal CO2, respiration rate, pulse rate, and SpO2—to provide an uncomplicated, inclusive assessment of the patient’s ventilatory status. IPI, a Smart Capnography algorithm, is available exclusively on Microstream® Capnography equipped patient monitors, including the Oridion Capnostream™ 20.
