COPD today is a major cause of disability in the United States, and the fourth leading cause of death. According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute more than 12 million people are currently diagnosed with COPD. And an additional 12 million likely have the disease and don’t even know it. The COPD Educator Course is designed for the clinician who manages patients with COPD in all health care settings. Its goal is to equip the clinician with the tools they need to manage and educate patients.

This one-day course is facilitated by leading clinicians in respiratory/pulmonary care. Topics covered at this course include:

  • Review of diagnosis, treatment, co-morbidity of COPD and Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
  • Successful techniques to improve communication with patients and family
  • Assessment of the patient
  • Age and cultural appropriate education techniques
  • Overview of medications and devices used to delver them
  • Oxygen management post-hospital
  • Essentials of effective patient education
  • Smoking cessation intervention
  • Management of stable COPD and exacerbation
  • Key components of pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Managing hospital events from admission to discharge
  • Overview of resources available to the educator and patient

This program has been approved for 7.75 hours of continuing education credit (CRCE) for respiratory therapists.
