July—Air Quality

Bookmark and Share

Sunny summer skies and warm weather make people want to venture out into the great outdoors. But for our lung patients, breathing in summer conditions can be a real challenge. When ground level ozone combines with particle pollution, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide, a toxic atmosphere is the result. Add activity to the mix—even something as simple as walking, gardening, or biking—and you can end up with an acute flare up of asthma, COPD, or other respiratory condition.

But that doesn’t mean our patients can’t enjoy the out-of-doors. They just need to know how to monitor air quality and determine when to head outside and when it would be best to stay inside in the air conditioning. We can help—

Do It

  • Watch for a press release in your local papers—written by the AARC and sent out by your state society. It will be quoting AARC members in your state on air quality issues.

  • Begin planning for World Spirometry Day on Oct. 14. State societies will be asked to hold exhibits and demonstrations at their state capitols.
