Long Term Care: Editor Larry Goldman focuses on patients’ rights in his “Notes” column and the “quality of life” theme continues with part one of a two part article on improving quality care in LTC facilities. Another article addresses the need to ensure safe and effective handoffs, and third looks at the impact of tobacco on older people. We round out the issue with a profile of our 2011 Specialty Practitioner of the Year and a poem that illustrates LTC from the patient’s perspective.

Management: Managers will find timely content in this issue, including articles on working together as a team, learning leadership skills through books, and the challenging job situation facing RTs in California. We also have a profile of our 2011 Specialty Practitioner of the Year, and Section Chair Bill Cohagen shares his journey from manager to bedside therapist and back in his “Notes” column.

Neonatal-Pediatrics: Must-read articles in this issue describe a new volunteer opportunity in Haiti and the role of the respiratory therapist as an airway clearance specialist. A profile of our 2011 Specialty Practitioner of the Year completes the picture.

Sleep: This issue kicks off with a “Notes” column by Section Chair Mike Runge and follows with a profile of our 2011 Specialty Practitioner of the Year. From there we have two great articles, one on the PAP-NAP and another on surgical options for sleep apnea.

Surface & Air Transport: Section Chair Steve Sittig provides an overview of the issue in his “Notes” column and goes on to report on the section meeting at AARC Congress 2011, national awards won recently by transport programs, the recent ARMR survey, and his visit to a transport program in St. Petersburg, FL. He also offers a short x-ray quiz you can use to test your skills. Rounding out the issue is an article from Section Chair-Elect Billy Hutchinson, a profile of our 2011 Specialty Practitioner of the Year, and a provocative piece on the possibility of a RRT transport credential.
