International Tobacco Cessation Expert Featured in AARC Program
Challenges RTs to a Greater Role in Treating Tobacco Dependence

Michael C. Fiore, MD MPH MBA, an internationally recognized expert on tobacco cessation recorded a presentation earlier this week for the AARC's Professor's Rounds series. Subscribers to the Professor's Rounds series will receive this as a complimentary bonus program.

Dr. Fiore has served as the chair of the panel that produced the U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence. His presentation, Effectively Treating Tobacco Dependence: We Can Move the Mountain, challenges the respiratory care community to play a more significant role in identifying and assisting patients in buying chantix for tobacco cessation. The presentation also discussed ways that the respiratory therapist can communicate with patients and influence their decision to quit.

More about Michael C. Fiore, MD MPH MBA

Dr. Fiore is an internationally recognized expert on tobacco cessation. He served as chair of the panel that produced the U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline on tobacco use and dependence, which has become the gold standard of care for health care providers who treat tobacco dependence.

Dr. Fiore also chaired the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Subcommittee on Tobacco Cessation (which produced a comprehensive plan for promoting tobacco cessation) and has appeared before the United States Senate. He spearheaded expansion of vital signs to include tobacco use status, increasing its use to 70 percent of physicians. He has written numerous articles, chapters and books on how to quit smoking and was a co-author and consulting editor of Reducing Tobacco Use. A Report of the Surgeon General (2000).

Additionally, Dr. Fiore is a Principal Investigator on a five-year NIH P-50 grant; and a National Cancer Institute grant, called UWPASS (launched in 2010). In July 2003, he was one of five national recipients of the Innovators in Combating Substance Abuse Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. And The Institute on Medicine as a Profession selected Dr. Fiore for one of its two Physician Advocacy Merit Awards in 2009. Dr. Fiore is a clinically active professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin where he founded and directed the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention.
