Lori D. Conklin, MD, has been named the new chair of our Board of Medical Advisors (BOMA). Dr. Conklin is taking over from Philip Marcus, MD, MPH, FCCP, who passed away unexpectedly last month.

Dr. Conklin serves as an assistant professor in the department of anesthesiology and chief in the division of vascular anesthesia at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She received her undergraduate degree from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX, in 1988 and her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1998. She completed residencies in anesthesiology and general surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, also in Houston, TX. She is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and has published extensively in the peer review literature.

Approximately 80% of Dr. Conklin’s time is dedicated to clinical duties as an attending anesthesiologist in the main operating rooms, labor and delivery ward, the Virginia Outpatient Surgical Center, and the University of Virginia Psychiatric ward. She also provides emergency airway management as needed throughout the entire hospital, and regularly teaches a variety of students, including those in respiratory care, about the clinical aspects of anesthesiology and care of the surgical patient.

Dr. Conklin has been a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Respiratory Care Committee since 2008 and holds memberships in numerous other medical societies, including the American Medical Association. She has a number of honors and awards to her credit, and was named a Distinguished Young Alumni by Hardin-Simmons University in 2007. The award is presented to graduates under 45 who have achieved a significant level of distinction or have brought extraordinary benefit to mankind.
