Long Term Care: Lorraine Bertuola discusses some of the things she’d like to accomplish during her term as section chair in her Notes column, and from there we have several interesting articles that cover everything from the importance of documentation, to maintaining your patient assessment skills in long-term care, to the collaborative approach to patient care, to improving detection of COPD.

Management: Section Chair Bill Cohagen brings everyone up-to-speed on plans for the new year in his Notes column, while our new AARC associate executive director of education, Shawna Strickland, offers part one of a three part series on maximizing patient education to reduce readmissions. We round out the issue with a look at patient satisfaction scores and why it is now more important than ever for RTs to do their part to make sure patients walk away from their hospital experience with a positive outlook on the care and services they received.

Neonatal-Pediatrics: This issue features two informative articles. The first looks at the use of an LVAD in a patient with Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy while the second reports on one member’s experience on a quality improvement team to decrease device related pressure ulcers.

Sleep: Sleep credentials and sleep licensure take center stage here, with an article covering the need to ensure the NBRC’s SDS exam is included in your job descriptions and an in-depth look at licensure and what you can expect if you are in a state that has yet pass legislation. The issue closes out with an interesting piece about sleep deprivation and how it could be putting all of us at risk for serious medical issues.

Surface & Air Transport: Our new section chair, Billy Hutchinson, discusses a couple of hot button issues in his Notes column while new co-editor, Bryan Byrd, shares an article on his relatively new transport team. Fellow co-editor and past chair, Steve Sittig, shares three great articles – one on the change in section leadership, another on promoting transport among RT students, and the third on the need to maintain situational awareness at all times during transport.
