AE-C Recertification Just Got Easier

The National Asthma Education Certification Board (NAECB) has announced a major change to its recertification process for the Asthma Educator-Certified (AE-C) credential.

In addition to recertifiying by examination, those with the AE-C may now recertify by earning 35 continuing education units in asthma-related content. The continuing education option is open to those who hold the credential now and to those whose credentials have expired or are about to expire.

Please note, however, that the deadline to recertify via continuing education is available to currently expired certificants only through July 31, 2014. After that date, those with expired credentials will be required to recertify by examination.

"The addition of this new recertification option is very promising," says AARC Associate Executive Director of Education Shawna Strickland, PhD, RRT-NPS, AE-C, FAARC, particularly given the ease with which AARC members can earn much of the continuing education needed for recertification. "The AARC has 19.5 CRCE credits available on our website right now that qualify for the NAECB recertification program," she emphasizes. Those credits are:

* Asthma certification prep course - 10.5 CRCE
* EPA courses - 6 CRCE
* Archived webcasts (1 CRCE each) - 2/9/11; 8/18/11; 6/24/09

AE-C certificants who recertify via continuing education will have their credentials renewed for five years. Those who opt for the examination route will have their credentials renewed for seven years.

Strickland says the AARC is pleased to see these positive changes for those who hold or want to earn the AE-C. “We’re happy that the NAECB recognizes the dedication displayed by asthma educators as they seek to learn more through continuing education.”
