  • Sharon McRee gets a chance to meet one of the lung transplant patients who benefited from a lung procurement protocol she developed at her hospital in this video on the ABC-TV website out of Asheville, NC. You can read much more about Sharon’s protocol beginning on page 32 of your August issue of AARC Times.
  • Frank Salvatore is recognized for receiving the John and Louise Julius Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Respiratory Care from the Connecticut Society for Respiratory Care in this article in the Times Herald Record out of New York.
  • This article in the Robesonian out of Lumberton, NC, talks about all the different types of health care professionals at a local hospital, specifically pointing out the quality of the RTs on board. The author gives credit to Kelli Heustess and her RT program at the local community college, where 100% of the students in 2013 graduating class just passed their NBRC exams.

  • Kathy Davison receives kudos for being named the Nebraska Therapist of the Year at the 2013 Nebraska Society for Respiratory Care Great Plains Conference in this article in the Lincoln, NE, Journal Star.
  • Lera Foster explains the ins and outs of smoking cessation and why it’s harder for some people to quit than others in this article in the Independence, MO, Examiner. She ends the piece with this tried and true advice: “While the old adage may be cliché, in this case, it’s true: If at first you don't succeed, try, try again."
  • Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has reappointed Dan Conyers to serve a three year term on the Kansas State Banking Board, and confirmation of the appointment by the Kansas Senate was announced in this article on Kansas City Infozine.com.
  • July the 4th was especially poignant for Pollinna Williams this year. It was her first as a citizen of the United States. The native of Trinidad and Tobago swore her oath of allegiance and received her citizenship papers during a ceremony on the 3rd that was covered in this article on MyCentralJesrsey.com.  “It was touching,” she was quoted as saying of hearing her name called. “I’m finally an American citizen.”
  • Kathleen Rapp is recognized for receiving her hospital’s Service Star of the Month award in July in this article in the Jefferson, NJ, Patch. The award honors employees who go above expectations and serve as role models for others.
  • Kathy L. Young is pictured in this article on NorthCountryNOW.com out of Potsdam, NY, about her hospital’s efforts to minimize ventilator-associated pneumonias. The facility is celebrating one full year without any incidences of VAP.
  • An auxiliary garden tour to benefit a local hospital’s cardiac care program is featured in this article in the Waterville, ME, Morning Sentinel, and William Wright is noted for speaking on horticultural therapy throughout the day at one of the stops. The therapy is designed to help people improve memory and other factors through gardening.
  • Tina Louise Moreno emphasizes the health effects that recent fires in her area may be having on people with respiratory conditions in this article on the CBS-TV website out of Palm Springs, CA. “We’ve been receiving many calls from our patients who are having great difficulty already,” she was quoted as saying.
  • Larry Ranels explains the importance of allowing tracheotomy patients to regain their ability for speech in this article in the Newman, GA, Times-Herald. “One of the things we have learned when dealing with tracheotomy patients is that getting them talking again gives them hope,” he was quoted as saying.
