January 15, 2014

On January 1, 2015 there will be a change in the state of Ohio regarding licensure. OAC rule 4761-5-01, which became effective on April 24, 2013 may impact the future workforce in the state.

Any person who holds a license issued by the state of Ohio prior to January 1, 2015, can continue to practice respiratory care in the state of Ohio without interruption. Applicants issued a license in another state prior to January 1, 2015 will be eligible for Ohio licensure, if the out-of-state license was issued based on the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)’s certified respiratory therapist (CRT) or registered respiratory therapist (RRT) credential.

Persons newly licensed in other states after January 1, 2015 and new graduates seeking an initial license in Ohio after January 1, 2015, must successfully complete the RRT examination consisting of both the written and clinical simulation portions to be eligible for licensure in Ohio. Posted in the box above are two links that provide more detail about this change. This statement is not an official interpretation of the rule and readers should obtain the official rule and FAQ’s for more information.
