What is your vision of the AARC in 2015?
To increase membership and member activity in the AARC. To provide more education and outreach throughout the country in order to spark professionals to recognize respiratory care as a great profession that is continuing to grow and prosper; and to provide excellence in patient care and research. Increase awareness of the respiratory care profession, especially in the economic times we are living in, and show what a vital role we play in every aspect of the healthcare profession.
What have you done in the last 5 years to promote the profession in your community?
In the last 5 years, I have spoken at many meetings and sat on several committees to represent the profession of respiratory care. I have increased the awareness of how important respiratory care is as a profession and how important it is to have respiratory care practitioners involved in every aspect of healthcare. I have worked on outreach projects throughout the state of North Carolina to provide education and training to hospitals that refer patients to Level 1 Trauma Centers. I have gone on mission trips to Mulago Hospital in Africa and implemented bubble CPAP in the NICU. I was with a team that performed the first pediatric cardiothoracic surgery there. Because there are no RTs in Africa, we did a lot of teaching to the physician on ventilators, blood gas machines, and oxygen. I have also been involved in transport; I’m a hands on person on top of my managerial duties.
