Patient AssessmentThis presentation will discuss components of neurologic, basic cardiovascular, renal, gastrointestinal, metabolic and musculoskeletal assessments as well as reinforce the recognition of respiratory failure in the critically ill patient. The presenter will review normal and abnormal findings of these assessments in the context of the critically ill patient. |

Diagnostics: LabsThis presentation will discuss normal and abnormal values in relation to blood chemistries, cultures, cardiac markers, fluid analysis, and blood gases. In addition, the presenter will facilitate the relation of the findings of these diagnostic laboratory studies to the condition of the critically ill patient. |

Infectious ProcessesThis presentation will review general infections common to patients in the intensive care unit and the various transmission routes of these infections. Other aspects of infectious processes such as VAP/VAE and preventative measures in the intensive care unit will also be discussed. |

Cardiopulmonary Disease ReviewThis presentation will focus on the cardiopulmonary disease processes that are common to the intensive care unit and are specifically addressed on the NBRC ACCS examination. These processes include but are not limited to: ALI/ARDS, COPD, cardiac disorders, post-surgical conditions, asthma, traumatic injury, burns/inhalation injury, pulmonary hypertension, and shock. |

PharmacologyThis presentation will review the common medications (pulmonary and non-pulmonary) used in the treatment of critically ill patients. In addition, the presenter will provide information on the effects/side effects and the role of the respiratory therapist in the administration of these medications. |

Airway ManagementThis presentation will identify common airway clearance issues as well as the indications and contraindications for the use of various specialty gases in the treatment of the critically ill patient. The presenter will also discuss the use and hazards of various artificial airways. |

Mechanical Ventilation, Part IThe first part of the mechanical ventilation series will begin with an exploration of the indications, contraindications, hazards, side effects, and beneficial effects of non-invasive ventilation. Next, the basic ventilator modes will be compared and contrasted. The last portion of the presentation will focus on ventilator waveform analysis in specific situations common to the critically ill patient. |
